GeForce GTX 280 will lose badly to R700?

Theinq today brought us more information of GeForce GTX graphics chip series. Theinq participated in the latest NVIDIA's Editor Day meeting. At the meeting, NVIDIA told reporters the relevant information of GeForce GTX 280,260.

NVIDIA said, GeForce GTX 280 built-in 240-processor, GeForce GTX 280 core frequency of 602 MHz, Shader work in the frequency of 1296 MHz, memory frequency in the 1107 MHz, with 512 - bit 1GB GDDR3 memory, built-in 32 ROPs. GeForce GTX 280 graphics uses 8 pin +6 pin Power Interface, GeForce GTX 280 graphics’ max power consumption can reach to 236 watts. GeForce GTX 280 card’s floating-point performance is 933 GFLOPS, failed to break through 1000 GFLOPS mark, because NVIDIA can’t significantly improve the core frequency of GeForce GTX 280.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 built-in that 192-processor, with 896 MB GDDR3 memory, 24 ROPs. GeForce GTX 260 graphics core frequency is 576 MHz, Memory Clock is 999 MHz, and memory interface is 448-bit. GeForce GTX 260 cards using two 6 pin external power supply interface, GeForce GTX 260 max power consumption can reach to 182W.

GeForce GTX 280 graphics chips uses TSMC 65 nm production technology, chip area is up to 576 mm2. GeForce GTX 260 graphics card, NVIDIA’s suggested retail price is 449 dollars; its rival is the Radeon HD 4870. Theinq disclosed, GeForce GTX 280 graphics performance 25% more than the GeForce GTX 260, but the GeForce GTX 280 is likely to lose badly to R700, therefore, this summer will be a very interesting summer.

  • This contradicts the earlier 5/20 news posting here about closed-door tests stating that the GTX280 will handily beat the R700 (x2) chip... well, which will beat which?! I'm confused now, lol.

With the projected price of the GTX 280 it better NOT lose to the R700 or its going to be real disappointing given the prices of each... ATI's will be cheaper likely.
